Contact Cares Telephone Counselor

Contact Cares Telephone Counselor

Volunteer for the Contact Cares program and be the voice on the other end of the phone when callers in crisis are seeking assistance, referrals, or someone to lend a listening ear. Volunteer telephone counselors are also responsible for answering general information calls regarding Bill Wilson Center programs and services, and helping families and individuals access the correct Bill Wilson Center program.

As a part of the Contact Cares program, volunteers should expect:

  • A comprehensive in-depth training on many of the issues facing the callers and Bill Wilson Center clientele. Topics include boundaries and confidentiality, child abuse, elder abuse, addictions, HIV/AIDS, death and grieving, multiculturalism, working with teenagers, and communication.
  • Monthly support groups for telephone counselors.
  • One 4-hour shift per week, or 16 hours on the lines each month.
  • Flexible hours. Phone lines run 7 days a week from 7:00am until 11:00pm.

For more information on becoming a Contact Cares Volunteer or to register for the volunteer training, contact Heather Furuta, Volunteer Program Manager, at (408) 850-6138 or hfuruta@billwilsoncenter.org.
